Introduction to Addiction Studies – 12th & 13th September 2019

This two-day workshop (10am-4.30pm) is for those wishing to gain a good basic understanding of drugs and related issues.  Content includes: –

Community Addiction Studies Course© (CASC) – QQI Award (Minor) Level 5 : 15th November 2019 – 31st January 2020

This course runs over ten weeks (one-day a week) and will start on 15th November 2019.  The Community Addiction Studies Course© is for anyone living or working in the community who would like to be more effective when it comes to drug/alcohol issues.  Content includes: –

  • Pharmaceutical information on drugs & their effects
  • Process of addiction
  • How addiction effects individuals, families, communities
  • Social analysis
  • Media analysis
  • Personal development
  • How individuals and communities can respond
  • Field visits to drugs services

Understanding Harm Reduction – 5 November (10am-1pm)

This half-day workshop (morning) is a short introduction to harm reduction and will provide participants with an understanding and appreciation of the key issues pertaining to theory and practice of harm reduction / minimisation.  Content includes: –

  • Principles of harm reduction
  • Practice of harm reduction
  • Development of services

Drug Related Health Issues – 5 November (2pm-5pm)

This half-day workshop (afternoon) will provide an overview of the major health issues which are initiated and/or exacerbated by substance misuse.  Content includes: –

  • Drug toxicity
  • Blood viruses (HIV, Hep. C, etc.)
  • Fungal and bacterial infections
  • Vein damage, associated with IV use
  • Lung and other organ damage
  • Overdose and universal precautions

Community Reinforcement Approach – 12 & 13 November 2019

This two-day (10am-5pm) training is for those who would like to gain a better understanding of the Community Reinforcement Approach.  It will be of interest to anyone already working /volunteering in a care setting.  This training will enable participants to: –

  • Develop an appreciation of the theoretical framework and principles underlying CRA
  • Gain an understanding of the strategies to develop drug and alcohol interventions
  • Assess the client’s drug and alcohol use
  • Develop effective treatment planning interventions
  • Enhance their CRA skill set
